Food allergies and food intolerances can be such a burden for you and your family. I myself suffer from a gluten intolerance which is so hard because I love bread, but having food allergies doesn’t have to be the end of the world! There are so many wonderful food substitutes available on the market. Here’s some products you can get in Australia that will make you feel like you’re not missing much.
Food Glorious Food – Substitutes for the Gluten Intolerant, Lactose Intolerant and the Health Conscious
Food is everything to us. Without eating, we could not survive and it’s also something that brings family and friends together. But what about people who genuinely cannot eat certain foods because of food allergies, or due to dietary restrictions? I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately and wanted to make a list of some of the great substitutes that are available to us in Australia for exactly those reasons. I guess this blog is more of a product review. Whichever way you look at it, here are some great products that I have found that make great food swaps.

FOR THE LACTOSE INTOLERANT
There are many products on the market that lactose intolerant people can enjoy that will help to make you feel like you’re not missing out on too much. From milk substitutes to vegan cheese products. But how do you know what tastes good if you haven’t tried the products yet? Maybe you have tried some and feel disappointed by them. I know that feeling! I’ve bought Vegan products before that I was really excited to try, only to find out that it tasted like cardboard and I just threw out $10 for a small packet of fake cheese. I’ve done some research lately and trialed some Australian products that I am happy to recommend that I believe will help satisfy your hunger.

Swap Dairy Cheese for Vegan Cheese
Cheddar Cheese Slices – I can honestly tell you that I have tried most of the Vegan cheese products on the market, and I find that My Life’s Bio Cheddar Cheese Slices are the best Vegan cheese slices on the market. They taste so close to the real thing that I had to eat two slices in a row just to convince myself. I cannot rave enough about this product. The taste reminds me more of Swiss cheese but gosh it’s yummy, and it toasts well under the grill too. I haven’t tried their other cheese products yet but if this cheese is anything to go by, you’re in for a real treat. You can get it at most Woolworths stores.
Parmesan Cheese – Follow your Heart’s Dairy Free Parmesan Cheese is another great alternative to real parmesan cheese. It is so close to the real deal, that I use this more than I use the real stuff lately. The best thing about it is that the kids can’t even tell the difference, and I can tell you that I have very fussy kids. It’s available at Flannerys Health Food Stores, but you might have to ask them to order it in for you.
Some Great Milk Substitutes
Soy Milk – I don’t like soy milk much, but I have to admit that Bonsoy milk is so good, that I could drink it by the carton. Hillview Farms stock it and you can buy it in bulk too. Honestly, I’ve tried many products on the market and this one is the best soy milk around. It even froths up with a cappuccino machine. It makes replacing cow’s milk a breeze, because it tastes so yummy in coffee or cereal.
Chocolate Milk – If you’ve ever had a child that’s lactose intolerant, I have no doubt that you’ve cried for them when they can’t eat a chocolate cake at a birthday party or have that glass of chocolate milk with the rest of the kids at school. Almond Breeze Chocolate Milk is the most incredible substitute for real chocolate milk. My kids drink this stuff and they don’t even have food allergies. You will definitely make your child happy with this one. Use it in cake recipes because the flavour will instantly turn any cake into a chocolate fantasy for your child. Available at Coles.
FOR THE GLUTEN INTOLERANT
As a person with a gluten intolerance myself, it’s been a hard transition for me. I found out about the intolerance after my 40th birthday and thought that it was the end of the world for me. The fact that I am European and love a good bread, made me want to cry. I can tolerate some dark rye breads, spelt breads and sour doughs, but white bread and the cheaper breads are a no-no for me. My intolerance and my IBS inflames and I am rendered useless for days. For this reason, I went looking for good bread and pasta substitutes. This is a tough one because most of the gluten-free breads and pastas are made with rice, and you can always taste the rice in it. There are some great gluten-free products on the market that actually taste really good and satisfy you when you eat them.

Gluten Free Bread to make your Tastebuds come to Life
Paleo Bread – Venerdì Paleo Bread is the best. I love this gluten-free, Paleo-friendly and Keto-friendly bread. It’s delicious as is, or toasted. I love eating it for breakfast with fresh farm eggs from our chickens, and making bread soldiers to dip into the yolk. It’s my favourite way to eat organic eggs. This bread is perfect for that. To buy this bread, check out this LINK for your closest store.
Gluten Free Pasta Option
Black Bean Spaghetti – There is nothing like Spaghetti Bolognese but without the pasta, it just doesn’t work. You can use substitutes like trying zucchini pasta, but it doesn’t give you that satisfying feeling that real pasta gives. This gluten-free, organic Black Bean Spaghetti from Eco Organics is simply amazing, and tastes so good in Spaghetti. You can buy it at Flannerys.
FOR THE VEGAN AND VEGETARIAN
If you haven’t always been a Vegan or Vegetarian, there is a chance that from time to time you really do miss meat. You wouldn’t be alone, because many ex meat eaters do. Besides succumbing to your cravings, there are a few pretty good meat substitute options on the market that you can try. I know many meat eaters say ‘why not just eat meat instead of eating fake meat that just looks like meat’, but they don’t understand allergies, clogged arteries or even choosing this lifestyle in the fight for animal rights. Not many companies nail the meat thing, but here are two products that I’ve tried and I’m very impressed with.

Vegan Meat for the Vegetarian and Meat Connoisseur
Savoury Vegie Mince – Vegie Delights have some great meat free products, but one that I was really impressed with was their Savoury Vegie Mince. It actually cooks up just like real beef mince and is great in your Spaghetti. With a 5 star health rating, I would highly recommend this product to anyone missing the meat taste but doesn’t want to go back to being a carnivore. Available at Coles.
Sausage Beer Brats – Another great meat substitute is a product from Tofurky. These Beer Brats Sausages are the bomb! We recently fried them up on our camping trip and they were simply delicious. They’re high in protein and taste wonderful with mustard. You can buy them from the Vegan section of your local Woolworths store.
SIMPLY FOR THE HEALTH CONSCIOUS
As we get older, we need to think about our health more, and sometimes it’s as simple as changing the oil that you cook and bake with. By substituting a better oil for those nasty vegetable oils and canola oils that are out there, you will help yourself to prolong illnesses like heart disease. You don’t have to be put into a category to enjoy healthy food substitutes. You have a choice to eat and cook better, so don’t let the fact that you can eat anything you want deter you from making better choices when it comes to food in your life. Here’s three more product recommendations for you to consider.

Make better Choices with Cooking Oils and Spreads
Coconut Oil – Many of you would already be doing this, but it’s even simpler these days to cook with coconuts. Aldi’s Just Organics Range is amazing for the health conscious, and it will save you money because you can buy Coconut Oil from Aldi now. Plus they also stock several other products from the Just Organic range. Eating healthier never seemed easier.
Dairy Free Cream Cheese Spread – I know that this creamy cheese spread could be in the lactose-free section above, but I’m trying to make a point that you don’t have to wait to get a food allergy to enjoy great products like this Creamy Sheese from Bute Island Foods. They have such a wide range of products too, and some of them are available at Woolworths.
Vegan Cultured Butter – Last on my list is this ‘I can’t believe it’s not butter’ product from Botanical Cuisine. It is actually better than butter and tastes absolutely delicious. I buy it online from All About Organics and find that I prefer it to real butter these days. It has a nice nutty flavour to it and spreads like a dream. The best part is that my kids love it too, so it’s a great way to get them to eat something healthy for them.
